The Seamonsters- Wonderland

When I think of The Seamonsters I think of six, Doc Martin-wearing young girls, fresh out of Sheffield, coated in glitter and generally having a bloody great time on stage and playing music together, and at least by the end of 2017, you all should be thinking the same. Today marks the day of the release of their brand spanking new track Wonderland on Twin Records. The girls start the track as they mean to go on, with an echoing retro sounding guitar riff, continuing this throughout the track but making it a heavier electric sound as the track goes on. It is clear that the band have been influenced by the likes of Black Honey with the same amount of sass, bass and electric guitar. It is very refreshing to see a group of young girls taking up a rocky sound as it is something that the music industry is certainly lacking. The single is out from today, 21st July. It is certainly not one to miss.

Haunting new album Cherry Fair from singer-songwriter Stephen Harrison

‘…like postcards from an earlier, purer, more positive time’ – The Sunday Herald on Stephen’s previous album Today Tomorrow

English-born, Scottish-residing singer-songwriter Stephen Harrison delivers this intimate and heartfelt new folk record Cherry Fair.

Having written his own songs since he was a teenager, Stephen got into music through legendary sixties acts such as The Doors, Simon and Garfunkel, Donovan, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan and George Harrison – the music that his older siblings would listen to.

As a teenager I was writing folk songs on acoustic guitar. Aged 16, I would strap my guitar on my back and head off ‘on my moped’ to places such as the Barnoldswick Folk Club.

During the late seventies, Stephen’s musical interests shifted. Attending the Edinburgh College Of Art in 1977, he was founding member of the post-punk band Metropak. The band supported the likes of The Rezillos and Josef K, and received airplay from John Peel.

Having since disbanded, Stephen has now returned to his folk roots. His new album draws on his experience, exploring an array of pensive topics from unrequited love to reconciliation to the brevity of life.  The subject matter deepens as the tracks progress.

Although minimal in sound, Cherry Fair is the result of a lot careful time and effort, Stephen going to great lengths to achieve the perfect sound using unconventional guitar tunings and a particular picking style. Vocals are often recorded multiple times so that he can achieve the exact phrasing. The result is a very clean and polished record.

As well as having a passion in music, Stephen is also a keen painter. Emotional tone plays a key part in his interest in the arts.

Artists that Stephen can be compared to include the likes of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, early Lou Reed and Richard Hawley.

Cherry Fair is out 9th May

Impressive electronic rework of Adam & the Ants’ Kings of the Wild Frontier by Johnny Normal (Featuring Marco Pirroni)

Electronic musician Johnny Normal delivers this shiny synth-driven rework of Adam & the Ants’ 1980 classic album Kings of the Wild Frontier.

Reaching number 1 in the UK album chart and spawning three hit singles ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’, ‘Dog Eat Dog’ and ‘Antmusic’, the original Kings of the Wild Frontier has left its legacy on the world.

Johnny Normal’s download only rework celebrates 36 years since the original release, and sees the talented producer recording his own unique versions of all of the songs. The album features double Ivor-Novello Award-Winning Ants songwriter and guitarist Marco Pirroni.

The album project was initially the idea of Adam Ant himself, who liked the style of Johnny’s music.

As Johnny explains: ‘My version of KOTWF is not meant as a copycat album as we could never improve on such a classic, rather an Ant fan’s homage to the fabulously exciting original record by Adam, Marco and co which had such an impact on my life and the lives of millions of the MTV generation.

The project sees Johnny teaming up with close friend and guitarist Psycho Pete and backing vocalist/bass player Izzie voodoo.  Whilst on tour supporting Adam Ant, Johnny and Psycho played several of their own electronic interpretations of Ants songs, performing to crowds of up to 3000 people. The performances were well-received by audience members, cementing the idea for the duo to create their own electronic cover album.

In 2014, the project came to a frightening halt when Johnny Normal was hospitalised in three intensive-care units with a succession of life-threatening illnesses. His life support was turned off twice and he was expected not to survive. Beating the odds, he pulled through, his family requesting that the unfinished album be played whilst he was in his coma, spurring him on to fight death. ‘I have no doubt this provided me with a subconscious link to the outside world and aided my recovery,’ Johnny has stated.

Appealing to both Adam and the Ants fans and electronic music lovers, it’s a record that all kinds of music enthusiasts can get into.

There will be an ‘album listening party event’ in London on Friday 17th June, tickets and info from www.johnnynormal.net

UK singer-songwriter Alan Bonner demonstrates unique nocturnal sound with new album ‘Night Music’

This is the type of music that will endure long after other fads and fashions have passed on by’ – Electric Harmony Blog

Mr. Bonner has the means of a pauper but sings with the heart of a king.’ – Surviving The Golden Age Blog

Alan Bonner Night Music Album CoverUK singer-songwriter Alan Bonner is set to deliver his third album, Night Music – a smoky, dimly-lit collection of songs inspired by London and its nocturnal inhabitance.

As Bonner puts it: ‘songs inspired by drinkers, thieves, prostitutes, spurned lovers, fallen rock stars and chance meetings with strangers on night buses. Songs inspired by the disaffected creatures that take to the streets and the bars of the city when the sun goes down.

The album touches on personal tales of long-distance romances, family relationships and depression as well as world-encompassing topics of love, hope and mortality. This is all delivered with a vivid and poetic lyricism certain to appeal to fans of artists like Rufus Wainwright, The National, Sufjan Stevens and Perfume Genius.

Produced by Aneek Thapar and recorded in South London, Night Music’s backdrop is one of intimate pianos, orchestral strings and minimalist percussion that perfectly encapsulate the album’s title.

He holds this whole history of gay men’s relationships in his music that Beyonce as a straight woman will never once hold.’ – QX magazine

Bonner has regularly worked with LGBT charities, being a gay artist himself. His interests in social issues have also extended to substance abusers and the homeless, having worked voluntarily and professionally as a support worker.

Having already released two well-received previous albums, Bonner will hopefully build on his success with this new release. Already, he has received previous airplay on stations such as BBC6 Music and MTV Italy, and achieved press coverage from Grazia, Gay Times, Attitude, Time Out London and RTE Ireland.

Although based in London, the artist has spent a lot of time recently living out of a suitcase, touring extensively across the UK, Ireland, Europe, Australia and the US.

‘Synth Wave Volume 1’ is the flagship VINYL compilation album of some of the world’s freshest innovative electronic music. Electro, synth pop, electro pop, darkwave… collectively we call it Synth Wave.

‘Synth Wave Volume 1’ challenges the apathetic and predictable current popular music scene and features an array of artists who are regularly championed by the likes of BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing, and Radio X.

Synth Wave is not just a genre, it’s a culture, an attitude, a state of mind. This is not just a compilation album, more a reflection of a world-wide music phenomenon that is happening now in cities around the world… with artists from Argentina, France, Canada, UK, Sweden, Ireland and Brazil. **Rob Green performs with The Department, was signed to Feargal Sharkey’s label and has remixed for artists as revered as Robbie Williams and William Orbit… Johnny Normal meanwhile performs with his post-punk electronic rock-pop group, and has toured with the likes of Adam Ant and Blancmange. Japanese Fighting Fish are ‘Swimming with Piranhas’ in their new savage release!

Japanese Fighting Fish, four lads who anchor their boat in London, are bringing fun back to rock with their electrifying new album ‘Swimming with Piranhas’, plunging us knee-deep into ferocious riffs then pulling us out again with soaring vocals from frontman Karlost.

‘Swimming with Piranhas’ doesn’t sound like a great plan for the average diver but Japanese Fighting Fish jump right in and live to tell the tale. This album nibbles away at any possible preconceptions of the band until an epic creature with an unnerving undercurrent is left. The album title comes from the real life wild experiences of Karlost and drummer Sweetman in Ecuador whilst staying with a Quechan tribe when they took a dip in the Amazon River. After their excursion, the boys did a Lep Zep III move and retreated to the countryside to channel all they had learnt from the ‘tribal way of life’ into creating an exhilarating thrill-ride record that bites hard and won’t let you go.

Their latest single from it, ‘For Queen Marilyn’, was written spontaneously after arriving at the recording studio and being asked to ‘just play something’ to check sound levels. An ominous Muse-like riff was quickly followed by crashing drums before the whole thing took off into a grunge explosion. Unwittingly, the Queen was born! After several stages of development, the new track is now available on SoundCloud here!

‘Swimming with Piranhas’ is the band’s third album but the first with Matt McGuinness completing the troop. The album explores new depths with pounding bass lines, incredible drums, and Gareth Mochizuki Ellmer’s pedal board creating the ‘biggest space sounds at just the right time’, according to Karlost, whose own vocal performance is gritty and wild yet captivating throughout.

What do Royal Blood, Savages, and Cage the Elephant all have in common? They were all supported by BBC Introducing! And now Japanese Fighting Fish have joined that stairway there is no doubt they are destined for the heights. One of their next steps will be headlining the venue Milo at the Live at Leeds Festival 2016 and with their sets being renowned for explosive antics and the boys having a habit for ending up accidentally bleeding on stage, this will definitely be a spectacle not be missed.

‘For Queen Marilyn’ will be available on the 3rd June, followed by the album ‘Swimming with Piranhas’ due for release on the 17th June 2016.

Their new single is a double A-side release showing two of the different sides of the group. First, ‘Electric Lady’ tells the story of repeated overnight stays with the same girl after meeting on several nights out, and the awkwardness that follows the next morning. Meanwhile, ‘Fade Away’ speaks of another level of awkward – finding yourself in the same room as an ex…

You can hear both songs here:

Already supported by Amazing Radio  for their previous single ‘Colour’, Vida have also been building their reputation on the live circuit. Having been handpicked to play XFM’s This Feeling shows several times, as well as four gigs at prestigious independent venue King Tuts in Glasgow, they also headlined a charity festival in Stirling to great acclaim.
